What does Simon say to Ralph that makes them both smile? Think carefully about Simon's choice of words — do you think it foreshadows something that might happen later in the novel?

Simon says to Ralph, "I just think you'll get back alright", and this causes both of the boys to smile at each other. The way he says it suggests that Ralph will make it back home, but some of the other boys, possibly even Simon himself, will not.

Simon means this in a kind way as though he would be happy that Ralph made it home safe.

Simon says "you'll get back alright," which makes them both smile. It is significant becuase he said only Ralph will get back alright and not any of the others. I think that the author is telling us that many more deaths will happen among the boys.

To make them both smile, Simon says to Ralph, "I just think you'll get back alright." He is certain this will happen but he doesn't say that everyone will make it home. Because he thinks the beast is the boys, he could be thinking that some will die from it and not make it home with Ralph.

That is a good point how Simon maybe thinks that he won't make it home. I think that becuase he doesn't really feel a connection with anyone he may think he'll die soon.

Because he thinks the beast is the boys, he could be thinking that some will die from it and not make it home with Ralph. I think this makes Ralph smile because it gives him new hope of rescue. Ralph's hope of rescue had been growing smaller and smaller and he was becoming hopeless. The reassurance that someone else still believes that he could make it home makes Ralph happy. Also since simon says "you'll get back" instead of "we'll get back" makes you see that simon doesn't believe that he will get rescued so this could be a lie to make Ralph feel better.

Simon believes that Ralph is capable of surviving the boys' destruction because he is strong and has faith in him, however believes others are too weak to survive - physically or mentally.

I agree that Simon's words sound like he's foreshadowing that some of the other boys might not make it off the island. This could show that Simon has a lot of faith in Ralph because he's so optimistic that he'll get rescued. It can also show that Simon's selfless because he smiles that the fact that Ralph will get rescued, even though he doesn't know for sure if he will get rescued himself.

What does Simon say to Ralph that makes them both smile? Think carefully about Simon's choice of words — do you think it foreshadows something that might happen later in the novel? Whilst Ralph is becoming a bit more worried about getting back home, Simon reassures him by saying "I just think you'll get back alright". This shows that he has confidence that Ralph will make it back, however his choice of words represents that he believes Ralph will make it back, but not necessarily the other boys.

What does Simon say to Ralph that makes them both smile? Think carefully about Simon's choice of words — do you think it foreshadows something that might happen later in the novel? Simon says to Ralph "I just think you'll get back alright." Noting that Simon you to Ralph "you'll", this could indicate that Ralph will make it back home but the others may not. This makes Ralph and Simon smile at eachother because Simon has made Ralph feel as if his work as chief makes him a good person and for that he will be saved from the island.

I agreed and I would also like to point out the fact that Simon doesn't even refer to himself getting off the island by saying 'we'. Maybe this foreshadows something awful happening to Simon as well?

I agreed that Simon said it in a way that made it seem as though only Ralph will be leaving the island. I think this is because Ralph is the least connected to the island and he always thinks about being rescued. He is the one who always worries about the signal fire and if someone could leave the island, it would be Ralph for all of his hard work in trying to get everybody rescued.

What does Simon say to Ralph that makes them both smile? Think carefully about Simon's choice of words — do you think it foreshadows something that might happen later in the novel? I have the feeling Simon is favouring Ralph to Jack, Jack has turned savage, Ralph has not. Simon indicates to Ralph that he thinks he'll get back alright. I think Simon can see the deep cracks in the boys community. This comment suggests that maybe the rest of the boys will not return, perhaps not even him.
