Piggy is very upset by the time their fire has burned out and ends up drawing to the other boy's attention the large fire that is out of control in the forest on the other side of the mountain. He explains the truth to the boys, how they have set fire to the whole island and that they will have cooked fruit and roast pork which is nothing to laugh about. He then proceeds to explain the worst fact of all, the small boy who had spoken earlier about 'the beastie' was missing and no one had noticed thanks to Ralph's lack of leadership in counting the group. This eventually distresses the group as they come to terms with possibly losing one of the small children. I think what Piggy means by "cooked fruit and roast pork" is that all of the food that was in the fire would've been burnt to ashes, which is a huge waste of resources and could lead to the boys running out of food later on. I agree that it was Ralph's fault for the small boys not being counted properly, but it's interesting how everybody, even Ralph, was keen to place the blame on Piggy for not counting them properly. I agree with your statement about Piggy meaning that the food would have been burnt in the fire. I don't think that the negligence of the small boys is entirely Ralph's fault because it wasn't just Ralph who didn't think about the little boys. I can see why they blamed Piggy because Piggy is the one who was in charge of learning the little boys' names and people may have thought that put him in charge of them.

After the fire rages out of control Piggy reveals that none of the older boys knows how many littluns there are, and some of them could still be in the area which the fire is now raging through. They realise that the little boy with the weird purple birthmark is nowhere to be found.
