Explain the significance of this quotation: “Percival Wemys Madison sought in his head for an incantation that had faded clean away.” This is significant as it demonstrates how Percival had completely forgotten his address and telephone number which he had learnt to recite at home. The first time Percival goes to recall this information is in front of the whole group of boys at one of the early assemblies, before Jack creates his own tribe, and Percival is explaining how the littleuns feel about the 'beastie'. This quote illustrates the change in the boys from being at home in Britain, to losing that first small part of civilisation, to completely becoming a different and less civilised person. It is almost as though Percival has forgotten who he is, only being able to recall his name. By calling it an "incantation" suggests that it was somewhat difficult. We can see how affected Percival has been by the traumatic experience.

They have been exposed to Jack's savagery and it has began toying with their heads. Percival, who had once recited his name, address AND phone number to the boys, now had trouble remembering the smallest details about himself. This clearly shows how the boys have lost themselves to the 'beastie'.

Explain the significance of this quotation: “Percival Wemys Madison sought in his head for an incantation that had faded clean away.” This is significant as it shows us how much the boys have changed. At the beggining of the book, Percival could recite his full name, address and phone number and he did this at an assembly. Now however, he can only remember his full name, not his address or phone number. This demonstrates how long the boys have been on the island for and how little the boys remember from home.

It also shows how much they have adapted to the lifestyle that they have been living in for so long now but also how much of their identity they have lost.

Explain the significance of this quotation: “Percival Wemys Madison sought in his head for an incantation that had faded clean away.” At first, Percival had missed his old life and was able to recite his incantation of his personal information. But now he has been stripped of all those memories. It shows how long he has been at the Island and how he grew to focus on surviving and not remembering his individuality.

The quote “Percival Wemys Madison sought in his head for an incantation that had faded clean away” is significant because after being on the island for so long, Percival has forgotten how to recite his address and phone number. This shows that he has forgotten how to be civilized British boy, and is now just a primitive and lost little boy, who has been traumatized by events outside of his control without the protection and guidance of adults which is essential to young children such as him.
