Macbeth, through paranoia, sends murders to kill Banquo, his son Fleance and Macduff's wife and child. Macbeth states that he has "scorched the snake, not killed it" and this shows he will stop at nothing to make sure he protects his power and remains the king.

Before Macbeth sends his murderers to kill Banquo, his son and Macduff's family, his depth of ambition to become king can be seen. The statement, "we have scorched the snake, not killed it" gives us insight that he intends to continue his brutal acts for his right to reign.
