What embarrassing thing does Ralph say to himself near the beginning of the chapter that he's afraid someone might have overheard? What does he mean by it? What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? Whilst recalling things about himself that he didn't discover, such as biting his nails, he accidentally says out load "I'll be sucking my thumb next". He just happens to think of a habit he could get into and has no intention behind it, although if one of the boys had have overheard him, they would think of him as weak and scared. This probably wpuld have got him teased. The fact that he is talking to himself shows that he is quite lonely. I'm not sure about him being lonely. I think that maybe he's just speaking an inner worry, that if jack sees him, he'll lose what little respect jack has for him.

Near the beginning of the chapter, Ralph says: "Be sucking my thumb next--", then looks around to make sure that no one has heard him. He says this after noticing that his fingernails have been bitten down, but he did not remember starting this habit. Ralph means that if he has started the habit of nail biting without noticing, he may also start thumb sucking. The fact that Ralph is talking to himself suggests that he is lonely and maybe feels as though he has no one to talk to. I agree. He might be worried about someone hearing him because he doesn't want them to know how scared he is feeling at the moment as they might think he is weak and shouldn't be their chief.

Ralph develops a habit of biting his nails, and he says "i'll be sucking my thumb next", which wasn't meant literally, but he hoped nobody around heard him. He biting of his fingernails may suggest he is afraid of what is happening around him, and scared of loson the boy's trust. Ralph talking to himself may demonstrate that he is desperate to hear someone on the same side as him.

Ralph had just discovered that he had been bighting his finger nails without realising he had started this habit, "I'll be sucking my thumb next" is what he says when notices. He didn't mean this literally, but as sarcasm. He still didn't want anyone to hear because he may come across as weak. Becuase he is talking to himself it could suggest he is lonely. He doesn't want anyone in the group to foresee a vulnerability in himself, so he needs to be seen as someone who is wiser and stronger, certainly not someone who sucks their thumb

What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? After realising he's developed a habit of biting his nails Ralph mutters "be sucking my thumb next-" then looks around frantically to make sure no one hear him. He's afraid to be heard because the other biguns would laugh at this and he would loose some of the precious little authority over them he has. The act of talking himself demonstrates that maybe even Ralph is starting to crack under the pressures of leadership and starting to go just a little crazy.

If he other see him as weak that will see jack as the more superior male on the island which then means he will be in charge and ralph will not be.

I think he is worried that he might start to lose his outer toughness, and start to act like a baby. I think it demonstrates that he is starting to feel a bit self conscious. I agree with you, I think that Ralph is starting to feel self conscious in front of the other boys.
