What embarrassing thing does Ralph say to himself near the beginning of the chapter that he's afraid someone might have overheard? What does he mean by it? What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate?

Near the beginning of the chapter, Ralph says: "Be sucking my thumb next--", then looks around to make sure that no one has heard him. He says this after noticing that his fingernails have been bitten down, but he did not remember starting this habit. Ralph means that if he has started the habit of nail biting without noticing, he may also start thumb sucking. The fact that Ralph is talking to himself suggests that he is lonely and maybe feels as though he has no one to talk to.

What embarrassing thing does Ralph say to himself near the beginning of the chapter that he's afraid someone might have overheard? What does he mean by it? What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? At the open of the chapter as the boys are walking through the forest, Ralph is looking at himself and finding all of the dirt and grime in his hair, on his teeth and under his nails. His nails were all bitten and he cant recall when he had bitten them. He proceeds to say "I'll be sucking my thumb next-". Ralph means this in a way as though he doesn't know what he will do next and that it could be something childish such as sucking his thumb. He is afraid someone may have overheard him as it could represent how he may be weak and scared. By talking to himself, Ralph could be feeling either lonely or possibly losing himself to the island and being not completely with it.

Ralph did not remember beginning bitting his finger nails suggesting that he could be thinking of many things and he is very stressed or anxious and so he began the habit without noticing. He could potentially do the same thing with sucking his thumb if things get worse.

Ralph had just discovered that he had been bighting his finger nails without realising he had started this habit, "I'll be sucking my thumb next" is what he says when notices. He didn't mean this literally, but as sarcasm. He still didn't want anyone to hear because he may come across as weak. Becuase he is talking to himself it could suggest he is lonely.

What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? Ralph says to himself, "be sucking my thumb next" after he realised he was biting his nails. Once said, he is embarrassed that someone could have heard him talk about the childish action. Biting fingernails is showing fear and stress, so if that gets worse, he might expect him to start sucking his thumb. When he talks to himself, it could be when he needs to double check his thoughts and confirm it's right, rather than just thinking them. He might not have enough faith in him.

What embarrassing thing does Ralph say to himself near the beginning of the chapter that he's afraid someone might have overheard? What does he mean by it? What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? Ralph talking to himself might mean that he's starting to lose his sanity and it could be a sign that he's desperate for someone to have a conversation with that's not like Piggy or Jack. What he means by saying that he'll be sucking his thumb next is that he realises that he's acting more and more childish by doing things like biting his nails. He doesn't want to start acting like a little kid because he's trying so hard to act like a responsible, adult-like leader.

This foreshadows Ralph into reverting back into his "original" self- one without morals and self taught behaviours. Whether Ralph was born good or evil will be found when he reaches this stage.

What embarrassing thing does Ralph say to himself near the beginning of the chapter that he's afraid someone might have overheard? What does he mean by it? What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? Ralph says, "Be sucking my thumb next—”, when he examines the bitten down stumps of his nails. By this, he means that he will soon be going back to childish habits as he did with biting his nails. Ralph talking to himself demonstrates that Ralph now feels uncomfortable talking to others, perhaps because he is becoming distant from the boys because of his role as leader.

He is becoming distant and growing apart from the boys, unlike the Ralph we see uniting the boys at the start of the novel.

What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? Whilst recalling things about himself that he didn't discover, such as biting his nails, he accidentally says out load "I'll be sucking my thumb next". He just happens to think of a habit he could get into and has no intention behind it, although if one of the boys had have overheard him, they would think of him as weak and scared. This probably wpuld have got him teased. The fact that he is talking to himself shows that he is quite lonely.

I agree that he may feel lonely, but perhaps him talking to himself is a sign of slow insanity? He probably misses his friends and family and the conversations they once had, and this could mean he desperately wants someone to talk to as you pointed out.

He could potentially do the same thing with sucking his thumb if things get worse. Ralph could be so anxious about not surviving on the island, that he automatically chewed his nails with much thought. Ralph wouldnt have wanted anyone to hear this because the boys are then more likely to stop listening to Ralph and tease him for biting his nails and possibly sucking his thumb.

What change in Ralph does the act of talking to himself demonstrate? He says "Be sucking me thumb next. I think he is worried that he might start to lose his outer toughness, and start to act like a baby. I think it demonstrates that he is starting to feel a bit self conscious.
