Ralph longs for civilisation again, in contrast to Jack. What is it that he senses is missing that is so important?

Ralph misses a few things from his previous life specifically. These items include a toothbrush, a pair of scissors and a bar if soap. These are all items that would make him, not only clean, but respectable, proving that he, and all the other boys, are becoming uncivilised. When he reflects on when life was like in one of his houses, you get a sense on how much he just wishes to be safe at home.

Ralph longs for civilisation again, in contrast to Jack. What is it that he senses is missing that is so important? I think that Ralph is missing the comfort, innocence and lack of responsibility that he had while living in civilisation. His parents took care of him, he had a warm place to sleep, the thing he feared the most was a book about spiders and he didn't have to take care of anybody else. Now his biggest fear is probably of never being rescued, he has a whole bunch of boys to look after, he has to build his own shelters and has to try to lead everybody.

Jack doesn't even want a signal fire to be kept lit. This shows how he may not even want to be rescued.

I think this is right about Ralph. He longs to stop being stressed and having to care about all the things he took for granted at home. Even if the boys are still on the island, with civilisation again, he can have order and live the way he was used to.

You can see how much this at least appears to contrast to Jack, who is not interested in making the fire to try and get home. You can tell that he is enjoying his stay by doing the things he never got to do at home, such as hunting.

Ralph longs for civilisation again, in contrast to Jack. What is it that he senses is missing that is so important? Ralph misses his toothbrush, a pair of scissors and a bar of soap. The are all things that are hygienic and sanitary which suggest that Ralph longs for civilisation and the clean, respectable life he once had. He looks back on a house he once lived in and this shows his desire to feel safe and at home once more.

When he is protected he can be strong and be a leader but in this enviroment Ralph has no protection. Ralph is surely missing the comfort and laid back lifestyle of his home.

Ralph longs for civilisation again, in contrast to Jack. What is it that he senses is missing that is so important? Ralph longs for civilisation again, as not only was it easier on him, but he misses things like his toothbrush, scissors and soap, possibly symbolising his dislike of savagery.

Ralph would like to have scissors to cut his hair, a bath with soap and a toothbrush. He misses the simple luxuries from his life before the island. The author doesn't say that Jack doesn't want to leave the island, but Jack hasn't thought about things like soap and a toothbrush and that shows that he doesn't mind whether he leaves the island or stays on it.

In reality though, would this be the life he would be returning too, or would he be going back to another uncivilized world of war?

Ralph longs for civilisation again, in contrast to Jack. What is it that he senses is missing that is so important? Ralph misses his the safety and security he felt at home, something that can't be found on the island. In particular, he misses the little things that made him normal: his toothbrush, a pair of scissors to cut his hair, and soap. Ralph fears that he may never experience a feeling of safety or contentment while on the island, which strongly contrasts to how Jack feels.

We have to remember also that Ralph is missing his parents, and without their protection Ralph is still a child. He may grow up without a childhood.

Ralph is starting to find it difficult because he is missing some aspects find his old life like his toothbrush, soap and scissors to trim his hair. He is also missing civilisation but also the safety of his own home and the security he had because he was surrounded by adults. He knew when he was around adults that he would always have safety, but here on the island he doesn't feel safe. This is definitely the opposite to Jack because he feels very contempt and safe on the island. He enjoys the freedom and hunting on the island and doesn't wish for safety or to be rescued.

Ralph longs for civilisation again, in contrast to Jack. What is it that he senses is missing that is so important? Ralph misses how he felt at home and reading books and little things such as his toothbrush, a pair of scissors to cut his hair, and soap. These little things show that after all, he is still a boy and still misses things that made him feel close to civilisation. He also would be missing the safety and the secure feeling of his home before he was sent away.
