Ralph's followers have deserted him because Jack's group has meat and they may think that Jack's group is more fun, seeing as though they have a feast. Both Ralph and Jack have fire, so the other boys were choosing between the conch or meat. Obviously the meat is more important to them, so they deserted Ralph.

Ralph has been deserted because the other boys followed their desire for meat and bloodlust to Jacks tribe. Ralph's ration and leadership were not enough to keep the boys on his side. Also, Jack showed more power - not only would he provide the boys with food, but he could protect them from the beastie and make them feel safer from threats outside of the tribe of boys themselves.

Although the boys wanted meat and to hunt and have fun, I believe that they ultimately made the wrong decision because they should've been keeping a signal fire going to be rescued and Ralph's way of doing things would've kept them all sane.
