How do Ralph and Piggy view Simon‟s death? How does each of them react to it? Why does Ralph laugh as he says, “I got the conch,” and why does Piggy react so strongly to his laughter? What explanations do they have for their behavior, and what excuses do they come up with? What do these reactions show about them and about human nature?

ralph and piggy want to deny having anything to do with Simon's death. they want to avoid it at all costs. they don't want samneric to know they were there. Ralph isn't coping well and laughs at all mentions of civilization on the island. he laughs at the notion he is still cheif and that the boys will still listen to him. when he sarcastically says 'i've got the conch' Piggy reacts strongly because he can see that Ralph is slipping away from civilization and Piggy needs Ralph to stay rational and lead the boys to rescue. this is all showing that Ralph is reating to Simon's death by being sad and giving up (on things such as civilization and rescue) whereas Piggy is holding his emotions in and keeping them hidden so Ralph has a (n emtionally) strong figure to look up to and have hope it.

Piggy tries convince himself that Simon's death was an accident and Ralph thinks that it was murder. They both are quite flustered when they talk about Simon's death. Piggy insists that they didn't have anything to do with it and that they really should forget about it.
Ralph laughs when he says that he has the conch because he thinks that the conch isn't very useful anymore and that it is a lame excuse to remain being a leader. Piggy reacts so strongly to his laughter because he values the conch highly and feels as though the conch is a very powerful form of authority.

I agree and I think that Piggy reacted so strongly not only because he holds the conch in high regard, but because it is one of the last things to remind them of civilisation and home. Ralph laughs when he says he has the conch because he is saddened by Simon's death and has lost hope in being rescued.

Ralph laughs when he says he has the conch because he is saddened by Simon's death and has lost hope in being rescued. He's probably lost hope in civilisation as well. The conch reminds Piggy of the first couple of days on the island, when everyone would worship the conch and everybody got along.

What explanations do they have for their behavior, and what excuses do they come up with? What do these reactions show about them and about human nature? Ralph and Piggy don't want people to know they were part of it. They are showing denial that they were included in any part of it. When Sam and Eric bring it up, all of them say they were doing something else although each one knows they were all present for his death. This leads to Ralph laughing at the thought that he has any power over the boys and the island. When he laughs as he says 'I got the conch' he is being sarcastic, as to say that everyone has to listen to him because of the shell, but he really knows that it doesn't mean anything anymore. Piggy doesn't like that the civilisation of the island is slipping away from the boys and gets mad when Ralph starts to just cave into the thought that they will never get home.
