What is the "nameless authority" that Roger bears? The nameless authority Roger bears, is the fear that surrounds his actions. I can assume that his shown lack of empathy, means that Samneric know there will be no mercy, only bestiality and possibly enjoyment at their suffering until they give in. Plus, picturing it in my mind, I imagine that Roger would have a very merciless look about him, and the unknown of his striking ability means that Samneric have no way of knowing whether they will survive his torture.

Roger is definitely a person who could be very unpredictable and his lack of empathy adds to the fear others would have for him. Samneric are in a difficult situation where they could be hurt very badly and Roger would have authority over them to do whatever he likes.

I agree and as we have already be shown, Roger is unpredictable and dangerous. His lack of empathy and mercy could be extremely dangerous to Samneric and their torture could just be a fun little game for Roger.

Roger isn't aware that his actions can hurt other people. If he does hurt people, he doesn't feel any guilt.

The lack of empathy Roger possesses is probably one of the reasons he wanted to join Jack's group, as they do "fun things" that are definitely not for the weak hearted. Roger seems to be isn't capable of showing his emotions well in the novel.

What is the "nameless authority" that Roger bears? Thr nameless authority Roger bears is the fear of the other boys. Roger is ruthless, using torture as a method to get samneric to join the tribe. Though he isn't the recognised chief he plays a large part in the rule of the tribe. None of the other biys would dare question him for fear of being hurt.

Yes i agree Kate, Roger has been a big contributor to Jacks clan. I think he has been accepted mostly for his similarity of being ruthless when it comes to killing.

What is the "nameless authority" that Roger bears? The "nameless authority" Roger bears is that he shows no empathy. Samneric know that roger will show no mercy. He is fearless when it comes to inflicting hurt and pain on a person. He has done so previously to the littluns, and showed no fear against hurting them. Roger is very unpredictable, who knows what he is capable of.

But, we find out that he went through with the torturing which shows that he was blindly following Jack's orders
