William Golding uses symbols to depict civilisation and savagery within society. For example, the conch represents power and order that is involved in civilisation, and the boys' long hair represents the liberation of savagery that a lack of civilisation brings.

Golding has used close analysis through his use of many symbolic characters, one of them being Piggy. Piggy symbolises intelligence and reason on the island, and his death is the destruction of this.

In Goldings book we as the reader see the close link that is clearly stated that lies between reality and the small reality that is on the island. Games are the allegory for war, the killing of the pig (beast) ; the murder of the enemy.
