Maycomb is a small southern town in Alabama that is segregated by both African Americans and whites. Atticus Finch is the father of Scout who is of the age of six at the beginning of the novel, and Jem is ten. He is a lawyer and he is related to almost everyone in the town by marriage. The Finch's are at the top of the social order, as they are white and quite wealthy.
