We learn that they are extremely poor and have a very low socioeconomic status. There are seven kids in the family and they only ever attend school on the first day of every school year as they are forced by the truant officer. The family as a whole has little to no education.

The Ewells represent one of the lowest classes of people in Maycomb. They are a very dysfunctional family and the children only have to go to school for the first day of every year. The children are grotty and disgusting, and their father Bob Ewell is an alcoholic.

We learn that the Ewell family has been the disgrace of Maycomb for three continuous generations. It is also stated that none of them have done an honest day's work (in Atticus's opinion).
