Atticus feels that he should defend Tom Robinson because if he didn't he would not be able to hold his head up is public. Even though Atticus knew he wouldn't win, as a lawyer Atticus promised to defend anyone that needs his help. The judge also assigned him to the case.

Atticus has a giving spirit and wants to and promises to help anyone when in need. Because of his caring personality, Atticus would have felt ashamed had he not helped Tom Robison even though he knew it would be a struggle.

Atticus feels he should defend Tom Robinson because if he didn't he would feel ashamed and his job as a lawyer is to help people in need. The judge also assigned Atticus this case so he must either way.

Addicus is defending Tom partly because he was asked and if he turned down the opportunity he would be classed with everyone else in the town. He wants to show Jem and Scout that people of colour are equal.

Atticus feels that he should defend Tom Robinson because if he didn't he would not be able to hold his head up is public. He feels that it is the right thing to do and if he didn't, he would lose his dignity. He knew that Tom Robinson didn't do what he is convicted of and believes that whether he's white or black, he shouldn't be discriminated against.

He defends Tom out of moral justice and to educate the public rather than doing it for the obvious outcome.
