The last sentence means that Atticus had wanted scout to hear what he was saying but she didn't realize until many years later. I think this might be important as every time scout spies on his fathers conversations he actually wants her to hear them.

The last sentence of chapter 9 means that Atticus wanted to tell her all the thing about what happened as scout grew older because he thought that Scout would understand more. As he knew that Scout was secretly listening to his conversation he knew to tell her. this might be important in this story because it is the realization of Scout knowing what their conversation was about and it is time to let her know.
