Near the end of this chapter Atticus cuts off Heck Tate as he is speaking to Jem. What might Heck have been about to say, and why would Atticus want to stop him from saying it?

He believes Ewell is to blame for Toms death but Atticus doesn't want him to be telling the kids as he is jumping to conclusions and it would not be right to do this. Atticus believes that everyone should have a fair say and he doesn't want the wrong message being put in the children head.

Heck Tate was about to tell Jem how good of a shot Atticus always was, but Atticus didn't want his kids knowing this because he wasn't proud of anything that was even potentially violent.
