In what way could Jem and Scout's snowman be seen as a transgressive figure in terms of local race and/or gender norms? Integrate a quote into your answer.

Jem and Scout's snowman could be seen as a transgressive figure because it is made with both mud and snow, snow representing the white people and mud representing the negroes. It could also be seen as representing a merging of gender norms, as it looks like both Miss Maudie and Mr Avery. This is demonstarated when Miss Maudie cries '...erected an absolute morphodite in that yard! Morphodite is another word for hermaphrodite, something that displays both male and female characteristics.

Morphodite is another word for hermaphrodite, something that displays both male and female characteristics. Their snowman being made of dirt and being a 'dirtman' and then being covered in snow to become white and be a 'snowman' could also show that the only thing that makes black and white people different is the colour of the skin on the outside and nobody is paying attention to what's on the inside.

Because of the dirt in the snow, Jem and Scout make a "negro snowman". It is also, according to Miss Maudie;"'an absolute morphodite in that yard!", which means it displays characteristics of both genders. It can be seen as transgressive because in the thirties, people were very racist and homophobic. So for Jem and Scout to turn their snowman, traditionally white, into a black hermaphrodite, it shows changing times.

I agree and this also shows the change of society's norms as the children create something that upsets and offends the community as they are still living in racists times.
