Which of the following excerpts suggests the reason given in the text for why Scout considers her father "the bravest man who ever lived?" Explain the reason for your choice.
A: "I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things. I guess he decided he wouldn't shoot till he had to, and he had to today."
B: "This time we aren't fighting the Yankees, we're fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they're still our friends and this is still our home."
C: "[K]eep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change... it's a good one, even if it does resist learning."
D: "[H]e hoped with all his heart she'd have a good day tomorrow. He would return his hat to his head, swing me to his shoulders in her very presence, and we would go home in the twilight."
E: "f I didn't I couldn't hold my head in town, I couldn't represent this country in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again."

This quote highlights Atticus' attitude to conflict and forgiveness. Scout doesn't really learn about this from anyone else. When he says they're fighting friends, he accepts it but can then make sure to hold onto the truth, to keep peace and make sure his family feels safe. Some of the other town people may not be as brave because they can not understand some moral concepts. Such as treating everyone as equals.

Some of the other town people may not be as brave because they can not understand some moral concepts. Such as treating everyone as equals. I definetly agree that quote B really highlights Atticus' forgiving nature and his desire for peace. This quote in particular also makes it easy to understand why he developed a 'distaste' for criminal law: because he is more inclined to forgive than to seek justice in the form of punishment.

I think excerpt B best relates to Scout's comment. Atticus is the strongest figure in Scout's life and best teaches her sbout the real world and its conflicting issues. His bravery and forgiving nature is brought out through this quote, it describes how sometimes fights will be close to home and affect home, but at the end of the day we do not want to hurt those closest to us.

It shows how Atticus is determined to keep his friends by his side, and is more interested in teaching people right from wrong than punishing them for being wrong. Scout considers her father "the bravest man who ever lived" because Atticus has the ability to forgive.

I also think that only someone who is truly brave could call the people they are fighting with their friends.

I think A could be the reason why Scout considers her father, "the bravest man alive." By choosing to put away his gun until he really has to use it, Atticus demonstrates both mercy for other living things and the courage to shoot to defend his family.

I really like your points that you present and the information you use to back it up. I think that Atticus really is a good role model for Scout as he is quite open minded and teaches her what he believes in, not what society thinks she should believe in.

I agree with your statement as it's often hard to demonstrate bravery through mercy. I also agree with Quote 'B' as this highlights the courage and bravery required in forgiveness.
