What is Piggy trying to get them to think about in the meeting? During the meeting, Piggy is trying to get them to think about order. While everyone is 'howling and screaming' like 'a pack of kids', they should be building shelters and keeping track of children. Instead of building a small, contained fire, the boys went overboard and caused great destruction to the forest around them. The matter becomes serious when they lose track of a child, who they last saw in the area of the blaze.

At the meeting Piggy tries to get them thinking for themselves and to think about their actions. He also tries to tell them that who knows when they will get rescued. They might be on the island for a long time before anyone comes. He tells them what the real situation is without sugar coating anything, but is unable to finish because jack interrupts him.

As the boys haven't realized, Piggy talks to the group about their chances of rescue. He tells them how no one really knows about their whereabouts since the plane left the airport. He has thought of how long it could take and how it might happen. The boys are actually listening to him for the short time, because they eventually want to go home. Even when Ralph and Jack promote the island, the boys are still new to this foreign lifestyle. With the help from the conch, Piggy is able to gain respect for when he is speaking.
