The cartoon is trying to illustrate how Atticus is being forced to represent Tom Robinson, because he was chained to a desk this could imply he is a prisoner at his job, and that because of this he isn't a real man. This really reveals how much people disagree with his decisions to stand up for someone who hasn't been accepted into society. I agree the chains certainly make it seem as though he is being forced to defend Tom as no white person would choose to do so. The community seems ignorant of the fact that he has chosen himself to defend Tom and they certainly wouldn't agree with his decision.

In the cartoon Atticus is depicted as "barefooted" and wearing only "short pants" which gives the impression that he sloppier and not a proper gentleman. the cartoon also shows him being chained down to a chair which could symbolise his lack of choices or free will, much like Tom Robinson.

The cartoon shows us attic us chained to a desk which could mean that he was forced to represent Tom in court because no one would ever do that for a black man.
