The 'fiction' Atticus is referring to is society's idea of a lady. It was unnaccebpatble for ladies at that time to fall in love with black men. So by proescuting Tom Robinson, an innocent person's life will be lost for the sake of Mayella Ewell's status as a proper lady. Atticus reveals that he believes it's wrong to prioritise someone's reputation over someone else's life.
