Lennie and George travel together, working on the ranches in small country towns. George acts as Lennie's 'protector,' giving him guidance for all aspects of life. Lennie idolises George, doing exactly as he does and exactly what George tells him to do. Though George repeatedly tells Lennie how he 'could live so easy' without him, he really does care for and about him, watching his back and defending him. They both thrive off having company, as most men of this era and time travel alone.

Other men question the fact that they travel and work together, but George just plays it off that they are cousins and Lennie's mum trusts George to take care of him as he isn't the brightest.

Lennie and George travel from farm to farm working to live, but men in that era don't normally work together and keep to themselfs but not George and Lennie. When they apply for jobs on farms their given the job because there's not any any men who work together. And with Lennie having a mental problem and forgets instructions and to behave they need the jobs. Even if George says that he would be better of without Lennie, he still protects and guide him while making sure they have a job and a living.

George cares strongly for Lennie and like Jasmin said, he still protects him and guides him which reflects his bond with Lennie.

George and Lennie, they are friend and partner, like George is a good commander and Lennie is a loyal soldier. No George no Lennie, obviously, but the opposite is either, if There's no Lennie, no George now too, Lennie like touchstone to polish George. So they are the partner who go through fire and water.
