While many 'white' people in Maycomb are dismissed when attempting to go into the church, Jem and Scout are accepted at First Purchase because their father Atticus is considered a friend to the 'black' community. They are accepted into the church by being greeted by the Reverend Sykes and guided towards the front pew.

scout and jem are accepted into the black church because Atticus who was helping Tom Robinson is a friend of the blacks, for helping one of their fellow African-americans.

The children were greeted and escorted to the front pew by Reverend Sykes, the pastor or priest of the church. They are accepted into the church because of Atticus' involvement with Tom Robinson's court order, they appreciate the fact that Atticus is helping an innocent African-American man of their community.

They are allowed as their father is not only helping one ''black man' but also the whole African-American community as he is making a difference in the town and is standing up for what is right. They are now considered as 'friends' and so are gladly welcomed.

Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to her church, First Purchase. The Reverend Sykes and many members are accepting of Jem and Scout Because they are very appreciative of his sacrifice of him defending Tom Robinson
