When Atticus tells Jem to take Scout and Dill home, he stands his ground and disobeys him. Jem copies the actions his father does such as putting his hands on his hips.

Jem refuses to go home when Atticus tells him to, partly because he's getting older and so rebelling, but mainly because he wants to stand up for his dad and protect him. And the fact that he's his father's son means that, like Atticus, he's not self centred and he doesn't care if it's dangerous for himself, he just wants to keep his dad safe.
