What does the atmosphere in Macomb at the beginning of the trial show about human nature?

I believe it shows that the people of Maycomb are just so bored with their life that they need something gruesome to stimulate them. They're so excited to see the trial, and it's as if it's a TV show. They really don't care about Tom Robinson and they hold no empathy for him, they just enjoy watching him get convicted. Everyone knows the outcome right from the beginning, but they watch it and enjoy it anyway.

He was charged, trailed and convicted by society.
