What might be the reason for Mayella's crying in the court?

She may be crying cause she is upset about the situation and has to lie, but she also may be crying to convince the judge and everyone else that she isn't lying and she is very upset about it.

She could be crying because she knows what she is doing is bad but has to do it or else her father will continue to beat her up.

She may just be very overwhelmed about the entire situations she has gotten herself into and would be feeling very anxious which may cause her to be crying and yelling.

She may just be very overwhelmed about the entire situations she has gotten herself into and would be feeling very anxious which may cause her to be crying and yelling. Mayella starts crying and yelling in the courtroom when being asked some questions about her 'assault' by Tom Robinson. She is in a very difficult position where she has to lie to prevent her from being abused by her father, however, she has loving feelings towards Tom and deeply inside of her she wants to tell the truth so that she doesn't see someone she 'loves' go to jail for a crime he didn't commit.

She may be crying as she doesn't want to betray Tom but doesn't want to face her father if she does.

She may be crying as she knows the truth about the incident and isn't owning up, she fears her fathers reaction and doesn't want Tom to get hurt and accused for nothing.

She may be crying cause she is upset about the situation and has to lie, but she also may be crying to convince the judge and everyone else that she isn't lying and she is very upset about it. I believe she's crying out of anger and anxiety at Atticus having been able to prove that she's lying. She doesn't want to go to jail because, although she's like her father in many ways, she doesn't want to be and she really does want to have a better life, but due to her upbringing, she can't just change.
