What made Tom visit the Ewell's house in the first place?

Tom first visited the Ewell's house as Mayella asked if he could fix their fence.

Tom first visited the Ewell's house as Mayella asked if he could fix their fence. He walks past it every day on his way to work and felt sorry for Mayella as she constantly babyysat her sibling and her dad was incapable of doing small chores around their property. |

Tom was asked by Mayella to come over to repair her fence as he did a great job on her other requests for maintenance. So she invites him in to do the job and as always she offers him a nickel for his work, which he turns down every time.

Tom first visited the Ewell's house as Mayella asked if he could fix their fence. Tom sees Mayella that she's always busy babysitting her sibling and that her dad is ignorant and takes pity on her, when she asks Tom to repair the fence he was hesitant but agreed. |
