What social mistake does Tom make in his testimony? Why is this shocking to the people?

The social mistake that Tom made in his testimony was that when Mr Gilmer asks him why he always helped Mayella out, he said it was because he felt sorry for her. It was wrong in the eyes of the court because blacks were below whites on the hierarchy, and it wasn't right for a black person to feel sorry for a white person.
