In most states of the USA people who drink alcohol in public places are required to hide their bottle in a paper bag. Why does Dolphus Raymond hide Coca-Cola in a bag?

He does this to pretend to be drunk to hide away from the fact that he is married to an African American.

He does this to pretend to be drunk to hide away from the fact that he is married to an African American. It is also because he feels that the town will not accept the fact he in happy with his relationship with the African American women and that they need something they can latch the rumour onto. |

Mr. Raymond wants other people to assume that he is acting drunk because he is drinking alcohol yet he is only drinking soda.

Mr. Raymond wants other people to assume that he is acting drunk because he is drinking alcohol yet he is only drinking soda. He wants people to think he's drunk because he has lots of half-breed children (half black, half white) and he think that if people think he's drunk then they'll excuse his behaviour. |
