Why is it unbelievable when Mayella says Tom had never come inside her fence before the day in November on which she claims he raped her? Integrate a quote to support your answer.

It is hard to believe that Mayella believes Tom hadn't been inside her fence before because she doesn't even know the straight answer. When asked, she "jumped slightly" and then further on, she adimits she "mighta" have asked him to do "odd jobs" for her. This is backed by Tom also testifying that he has been inside the fence before.

When Atticus asks Mayella if she had ever asked Tom inside the fence before she said, "I did not, I certainly did not," after she had already jumped when he mentioned Tom coming inside the fence. Mayella then proceeded to contradict herself when asked if she had ever asked Tom to any odd jobs for her and she said, "I mighta." Mayella seems very nervous about the fact that Tom had been inside the property before, she didn't tell Atticus that he had but the reader is sure Atticus knows Mayella is lying.

You can tell that she is nervous and scared because she ends up contradicting herself and because of this, her story falls apart.
