Both Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and Eugenia 'Skeeter' Phelan in The Help try to bring justice to members of the African-American Community. Discuss.
>Courage
- Both Atticus and Skeeter are brave enough to have their own views and thoughts regarding negroes. "Nigger-lover is just one of those terms that doesn't mean anything."
- Skeeter is courageous in interviewing the black maids because if she is caught, she would be segregated by the community for her beliefs. "You ought not to joke about the coloured situation."
- Atticus is courageous in the way that he makes such a strong case for Tom despite risking his reputation in the community. "I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again."
>Persistence
- Skeeter is persistent in the way she carries out interviewing the maids while she knows she shouldn't be and knows there are major consequences. "...ask yourself this question. Am I gonna believe all them bad things them fools say about me today?"
- Atticus knows he will lose the court case but he continues to do his job to the best of his ability. "...When it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins."
- Atticus gets criticised throughout the novel for helping Tom Robinson but pays no attention to it. "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anyone says to you, don't let 'em get your goat."
>Aftermath
- Skeeter's book becomes popular, she is celebrated and the black community becomes more respected. "Is a white women really beating on a white man to save me?!"
- Atticus is threatened by Bob Ewell but Atticus isn't afraid and doesn't worry about it. "Atticus didn't bat an eye, just took out a handkerchief and wiped his face."
- Tom Robinson is shot during an escape attempt. "Toms dead, they shot him."
