Gender
How are different gender roles portrayed in To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help?
>female role
-TKAM scout is expected to wear a dress and not pick fights
"You should be in a dress and camisole, young lady"
-The Help Skeeter is expected to get married and have children
-a female figure who pressures them into fitting the mould. Skeeter is her mother, scout is aunt Alexandra
"Would it really be so terrible if I never met a husband?" Skeeters Mum to skeeter
"This was a part of her campaign to teach me to be a lady." Aunt Alexandra to Scout
>breaking the mould
-TKAM scout breaks the mould by wearing overalls, fighting but does begin to accept the role near the end
"Well, you won’t get very far until you start wearing dresses more often"
"I began to think there was some skill involved in being a girl."
-skeeter breaks the mould by getting an education and a job
"I got a job today!"
-not excluded. Jem still wants to play with scout and skeeter is still friends with the other women.
>the impacts of breaking the moulds
TKAM scout is the one who changes to fit the gender expectations, but her views still stay the same I.e she would still rather wear overalls at the end of the novel, but will wear dresses if it is expected of her.
'“Where are your britches today?”
“Under my dress.”'
-The Help Skeeter changes her mothers view of gender roles when she is accepted the the end
"I have never been more proud of you"
-even though they break the mould, there is no effect on them intellectually.
"Scout yonder’s been readin‘ ever since she was born
