Comparative Plan (Natasha, Maddy, Matt, Georgia and Nat)

Discrimination Essay Plan:

Prejudice is evident in To Kill a Mockingbird in many characters and events.

• Due to Tom Robinson's race he has been convicted of a crime based on his colour. 

"I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella"
"Tom's death was typical. Typical of a nigger to cut and run. Typical of a nigger's mentality to have a plan, no thought for the future."

• Aunt Alexandra forces only lady-like ways onto Scout as she spends too much time with her brother and Dill and needs to become a women.

"It's time you started bein' a girl and acting right."
"Jean Louise, stop scratching your head."

• With the choice of isolating himself, Boo has been stereotyped into some monster.

"Every scratch of feet on gravel was Boo Radley seeking revenge."
"He dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were bloodstained."

Throughout 'the help' inequality is shown heavily towards the African-American community.

• 'The help' have to use different toilets because they believe that they have diseases.

"They carry different diseases than we do. That's why I've drafted the Home Health Sanitation Initiative."

• They often get little or no pay at all.

The children of 'black' maids get less opportunities to go to school.

• The 'help' aren't allowed to sit at the same table as the white people.

"We've been over this, Miss Celia. You're suppose to eat in the dining room, that's how it works. Here, let me take your plate back."

Through the rough times characters from both texts shine through and fight prejudice and inequality.

• Atticus was determined to make a change in the racist society of Maycomb by defending Tom Robinson in his trial. Atticus feels that it was his responsibility to stand up for what was right.
  

"If I didn't take this case then I wouldn't be able to hold my head up, I wouldn't be about to tell anyone what to do, not even you and Jem."

• Skeeter is appalled by the cruel treatment that the 'black' community ('the help') are shown as she wants to change the ways of the town.She goes against Miss Hilly and the others to make a change and hear the helps' side. This statement shows how desperate Skeeter is to put a stop to the mistreatment and discrimination of the town.  

"This isn't about me. It doesn't matter how I feel."

• Both Skeeter and Atticus go against the views of the community to fight for what they believe in, put a stop to discrimination and gain equality among all in the town.

"We are two people. Not that much seperates us. Not as nearly as much."
