- Atticus was determined to make a change in the racist society of Maycomb by defending Tom Robinson in his trial. Atticus feels that it was his responsibility to stand up for what was right.

- Skeeter is appalled by the cruel treatment that the 'black' community ('the help') are shown as she wants to change the ways of the town.She goes against Miss Hilly and the others to make a change and hear the helps' side. This statement shows how desperate Skeeter is to put a stop to the mistreatment and discrimination of the town.
- Both Skeeter and Atticus go against the views of the community to fight for what they believe in, put a stop to discrimination and gain equality among all in the town.
