How does To Kill A Mockingbird and The Help explore racism
Racism shown by white people
- This shows that Hilly has no respect for the coloured people and thinks of them as different to white (they are not equal to white people)
"Coloured people and white people are just so different"
- This shows us that because Tom Robinson is a coloured person that he can be blamed for whatever crime.
"Well Dill after all he's a negro"
- This shows that people in the society, a person who helps the black is given a negative response.
"Ain't nothin but a nigger lover"
Racism shown by coloured Americans
- This explains the separation between two different coloured people, and how some aren't open to change.
"You ain't got no business bringing white chillun here- they got their church, we got our'n"
- This shows that the segregation/racism has caused the coloured people not to befriend a white, hence not trying to fix the problem of racism.
"Negros wouldn't have anything to do with her because she was white"
Hope for change
- Symbol that both red satchel and briefcase have documents to equalise rights for black people. In turn, both hope that the racism around them will stop.
Symbol briefcase
- This shows how there is hope that "The Help" will be successful and people will realise how badly blacks are treated.
"I wonder, was this really my story to tell? On the other hand, I just wanted the story to be told. But the truth is that I didn't think anyone was going to read it"
- Shows how change is starting through some people.
"Alexandra, calpurnias not leaving this house until she wants to... She is a faithful member of our family"
