Atticus/skeeter
Atticus
> Atticus fights for the African-American rights by defending Tom Robinson after being falsely accused for raping
the daughter of a white man (Mr Ewell), because of the colour of his skin.
- Atticus believes that if he didn't defend Tom Robinson he wouldn't feel like he couldn't walk around Maycomb with his head high.
"the main one is if I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this country..."
- Atticus believes that people should not judge other people because of their looks and he tells this to scout.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
- This is where Atticus defend Tom Robinson at the court, he is referring this to Mr Ewell as he had said that
his daughter Mayella that Tom Robinson took advantage of her.
"and so a quiet, respectful, humble Negro, who had...temerity to 'feel sorry' for a white women...to put up against his words..."
Skeeter
> Skeeter fights for the African-American rights by writing a book about 'the Help'. she interviews the maids to share their point of view and how they feel about being in the society. Skeeter does this because she wanted to show the society that the maids should be treated with respect and with equality, treating them like their apart of their family, as they help to cook, clean, look after children, etc.
- Skeeter shows the perspective of the maids 'the help' to let people know their point of view of life in Jackson Mississippi.
" no! I wanna show her perspective. so people might understand what it's like from your side".
"I want to interview you about what it's like to work as a maid. I'd like to do a book of interviews about working for white families. We could show what it's like to work for uh, say, Elizabeth?"
- As Hilly had said to Skeeter and her friends to build a toilet for the maids outside, Skeeter tells off Hilly and make fun of her because she defends the maids an all these things that hilly says is not true about the help.
"maybe we should just build you a bathroom outside, Hilly".
- Skeeter also shows confidence that writing this book about 'the help' could change the way of the thoughts of people and that people would understand what it feels like being a maid and the treatment as well.
"I know. Maybe things can change".
Atticus and Skeeter
> As Atticus and skeeter wants to achieve justice and the rights for the African American they both try and have the town to get the message that people should be treated equally. As Skeeter can't change the people rights with success she could convince people to change their believes and consider people as they are we can also see this with Atticus as well. Atticus is a lawyer, he defends the African American rights and wants people that they are no different from others.
-They both also form friendship between the two communities, for instance there is friendship between Skeeter, Minny and Aibileen and Atticus and Tom Robinson they both also have courage.
" I can't leave you two right here, when things are getting bad from the mess I've created..."
"This time we aren't fighting the Yankees, we're fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they're still our friends and this is still our home."
