Atticus takes on many influential roles within the Maycomb community. Discuss.
>Community guy -Everybody knows him and he is well respected. "We’re so rarely called upon to be Christians, but when we are we’ve got men like Atticus to go for us." -He has formed a relationship with most people in town, like Miss Maudie and Mr Cunningham. "If your father's anything, he's civilized in his heart." -Taking on the Tom Robinson case has shattered some people's views of him, like Bob Ewell. "Too proud to fight, you nigger-lovin' bastard?"
>Lawyer -He is seen as a well respected lawyer who is good at his job. "in spite of Atticus's shortcomings as a parent, people were content to re-elect him to the state legislature...without opposition." -To maintain his integrity as a lawyer, he took on the Tom Robinson case. "If I didn't [take in the case] I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature" -Even though people hated him for it, he continued to do his job and defend Tom. "Bob Ewell threatened Atticus that if the trial took longer, he would kill Atticus."
>Father -Scout was freely allowed to be the person she wanted to be; willing to learn and wear whatever she wants regardless of what society indicates she should do, which reflects upon Atticus’ parenting style. “we’ll go on reading every night just as we always have” -When Jem damages the camellia bushes of Mrs. Dubose, Atticus sentences him to read to her each day, which illustrates Atticus as a father who teaches his children the correct manners. “but to do something like this to a sick lady is inexcusable” “go down and have a talk with Mrs Debose” -Atticus reads to Jem and Scout, which portrays that he will still be there for them whenever they need, and they are important within his life. "anything Atticus happened to be reading when I crawled into his lap every night."
