What is unusual about how long it takes the jury to reach a verdict? Why do you think this is the case?

Atticus tell Gem and Scout that normally the jury only takes a few minutes when convicting an African-American, but this time they took a couple of hours and he thinks, "this may be the shadow of a beginning". Meaning that there is still hope for Tom to succeed in being proved guilty. This took place as Atticus is finally making a deference in the mind set of the jury.

It took so long for the jury to reach a verdict about the accusation of Tom Robinson because the jury had to think about the evidence that Atticus unfolded about Tom which made it a hard decision.

given the racism s in Maycomb, it shows how hard Atticus worked in Tom's defense that the jury didn't return a guilty verdict straight away.

its unusual for how long it takes the jury to get his verdict especially seeing as it usually takes a few minutes to convict a black man but even though he still convicts Tom Robinson it still shows that the jury considered Atticus's evidence.
