The explanation that Atticus gave for Bob Ewell personal attack and threats is he jokes about it and he doesn't want Jem an Scot to be threatened of Bob Ewelle as he threatened Atticus because he wanted to prove the Tom did do those things to his daughter and I think he didn't want to be humilaated by the people in Maycomb.
