What explanation does Atticus give for Bob Ewell's attack? What makes him draw his conclusions?

Atticus says that he thought if Bob did do anything he would come after him and not after the children. He is shocked that Ewell had purposely set out to harm Jem and Scout. Atticus is very confused about the events of the night.

Atticus was very surprised of what bob ewell did to Jem and scout so he told the sheriff that if mr ewell came to threaten Jem and scout then he would come for him next (Atticus). He draws to his conclusions because he thought that the kind of act wouldn't be expected.
