How is the following statement from Chapter 31 paradoxical?
"I felt very old, but when I looked at the tip of my nose I could see fine misty beads, but looking cross-eyed made me dizzy so I quit."

This statement contradicts itself because the rest of the sentence has nothing to do with feeling old. Furthermore, one who felt "old" wouldn't go cross-eyed just to see the end of their nose.

This is true. She may feel old but she is not acting in a typical way an old person would act. Maybe it is a feeling of being old because of her experiences, not comparing to the adults she knows are old.

I agree, this quite a childish thing to do and nothing else in the statement besides "I felt very old" has anything to do with being old.

How is the following statement from Chapter 31 paradoxical? "I felt very old, but when I looked at the tip of my nose I could see fine misty beads, but looking cross-eyed made me dizzy so I quit." One who was old would not attempt to view their nose in the first place as it is very childish and only high concentration would send such a person dizzy. It could be likened with the young persons challenge to cur their tongue or touch their nose with it.

I believe that this statement is paradoxical as it shows a person feeling "very old" while doing a childish action. It is also completely contradictory as the rest of the statement has nothing to do with being old, but illuminates a more childlike attitude.

How is the following statement from Chapter 31 paradoxical? "I felt very old, but when I looked at the tip of my nose I could see fine misty beads, but looking cross-eyed made me dizzy so I quit." This statement is a paradox because Scout is doing a childish and youthful action, and yet she says she feels "very old".

This statement contradicts itself because the rest of the sentence has nothing to do with feeling old. Furthermore, one who felt "old" wouldn't go cross-eyed just to see the end of their nose. Especially since the act of looking cross-eyed is quite a childish thing to do and it shows how youthful she really is.
