What is something significant about Scout trying to climb into Atticus' lap?

Scout crawls onto Atticus' lap, after accidently upsetting Jem, for some comfort from her father. Atticus says to Scout, “You’re getting so big now, I’ll just have to hold a part of you... don’t let Jem get you down. He’s having a rough time these days. I heard you back there.” The significance about Scout climbing into Atticus' lap is that she needs her father as she doesn't have the affection from a mother. As Scout is getting older Atticus says that he can only 'hold part of [Scout]' which I believe to mean as he can only help her a little but she has to make her decisions and take responsibility. I don't know if this analogy is anywhere near close but that's what I believe he means.

Her not fitting correctly on his lap also signifies that she is growing up and needs to act older although she still wants to be treated as if she was young again.

Scout crawling into Atticus' lap signifies her need for a parents support and love. When Atticus states that he can only hold part of her, he is trying to say that even though he is around he can't look after her completely, she has to make her own decisions and work out some of her problems by her self.

Atticus is correct, you have to grow up some time but you should always have the support of your parents.
