Atticus
Community- role in the community/society
- "nigger-lover"
some people in the community don't like him because of his beliefs and his job.
- "are you proud of yourself tonight that you have insulted and a total stranger circumstances you know nothing about."
he doesn't judge people based on the rumours he hears.
- "it just shows you how poor that a person is, it doesn't hurt you."
Atticus doesn't take offence from society's silly remarks.
Lawyer
- "the one thing that doesn't abide by majority rules is a persons conscience."
Atticus shows fairness in the courtroom.
- "I wanted to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun. It's when your licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."
- "I'm no idealist to believe it firmly in the integrity of our courts and un the jury system - that is no ideal to me, it is living, working reality. Gentlemen, a court is no better than each man of you sitting before me on this jury..."
Father
-"you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
Atticus knows you can't judge someone based on rumours or gossip unless you have experienced the things as him.
-"nigger-lover is just one of those terms that doesn't really mean anything, like snot-nose."
Atticus is trying to teach the kids not to fall into society's stereotypes especially ones involving racism.
- "I do my best to love everybody..."
Atticus teaches the children that no one should be judged for stereotypes and they should give everyone a chance before 'judging a book by its cover.'
