When Simon slips off the beach to explore the forest he makes his way to the fruit plantation and picks fruit for many of the boys before continuing along the path into the higher and denser jungle. Soon Simon was alone and surrounded by trees, as the air cooled the plants stirred the forest became " dim and strange as the bottom of the sea". Candle buds then opened wide, seemingly shimmerng under the light of the first stars of the evening. Their scent filled the air of the island.

Simon slips away from the beach to explore the forest. What happens? (pp. 70-2) When Simon slips away from the beach to explore the forest, it makes it seem that he exists outside the conflict between Ralph and Jack. In this chapter we start to see his kind and generous personality, like when he helps Ralph make the huts instead of playing like the other boys. When he leaves the beach he walks through acres of fruit trees and flowers. He picks some ripe fruit that is too high for younger boys to reach and offers it to the many outstretched hands. He continues walking and soon high jungle closes in around him. He comes to a place filled with sunshine and he marvels at the beauty of the nature around him. "The scent of the candle-buds spilled out and took possession of the air."

Simon slips away from the beach to explore the forest. What happens? (pp. 70-2) When Simon slips away, he finds a nook in the forest that is entirely hidden by mats of creepers and bushes. Inside is a secure cabin, from which you can only see the clearing and hear the faint sounds of animals, birds, and the breaking of waves. When the light fades and Simon is in complete darkness, candle-like buds open and release and intoxicating smell, which 'took possession of the island'.

Simon slipped away into the forest through a nook in the creepers and here you can hear the smells of the animals and the flowers to find a spot away from everyone else. Where he finds this spot, the candle-like buds start to open and "their scent spilled out into the air and took possession of the island". Before finding his spot in the jungle, he also picked some fruit for the little boys that followed him. This shows a very generous side that not many of the other boys seem to have.

I think that Simon's act of generosity towards the younger boys is something that sticks out about this chapter and I agree that it makes him seem different than the other boys. His difference might be something that'll become a main thing in one of the later chapters.
