Consider the conversation between the two boys on pp. 19 & 20. Ralph can be considered an optimist, Piggy a pessimist, can you explain what has led to these boys' personalities being so different? Ralph and Piggy are considered different because while Ralph has been sheltered by his parents, Piggy lost both his mum and dad, resulting in him being much more aware of how unfair life can be, and it makes him see the real dangers of their situation, where as you can see Ralph's optimism when he tells Piggy he is sure his dad will come and rescue them.

Ralph can be considered an optimist because he has a rather optimistic outlook on the situation - he believes his father will find them and rescue them. This is due to his sheltered upbringing and caring parents. Piggy, however, has a more realistic view - which can be seen as pessimistic. This is due to losing his parents, and possibly even bullying (hence the nickname "Piggy").

Ralph was probably shielded from the world by his parents when he was a little boy and this has made him slightly immature. Ralph's immaturity is shown when he refers to his father as "Daddy". He is seen as optimistic because he insists that his father will come and rescue them. Piggy has been faced with the death of his parents and that has forced him to grow up quickly. He is realistic about being stuck on the island and the fact that the boys aren't going to be saved anytime soon.
