In the first scene of the novel, we read that a heron was frightened off by the sound of Lennie and George approaching the pool. In the last scene, a heron quickly gulped down a water-snake. What is the purpose of this detail?

The purpose of the heron is that it symbolises that Lennie and George went along a long road together and that road ends with Lennie dying from a gun shot because the heron then swallows a water snake meaning that George had to let Lennie go.
