Describe and explain the different reactions of Simon, Ralph and Jack to the "candle buds". As the boys examine the bushes, Simon realises that the bushes are candle buds. "Like candles. Canndle bushes. Candle buds" pg 40. Ralph states that just because they look like candles, it doesnt mean that you can light them like an ordinary candle. Jack insolently points out that they are green and you can't eat them. He then says to the boys to just leave it and keep moving. Jack says this in a manner that hints that the discussion is pointless and so are the candle buds.

Simon seems very interested in how they be able to help the boys while Ralph just rules them out as being helpful by saying "You couldn't light them." "They just look like candles."

These candle buds are like the many exotic and undiscovered areas of their temporary home. The three boys are all interested at first to see what qualities the scented plant has. Simon goes as far to give it a name, telling us he is interested to know more about them and perhaps share the name so others can recognise it as well. However, Ralph contradicts the name, being literal of the fact that the name is misleading because the plant won't light and work as a proper candle should. Then Jack also points out that the plant is inedible, losing interest and urging the others to move on. As the two boys are the main leaders, once they find the plants are unhelpful for the survival of their group, they stop looking for anything else the plant may hold. Simon leaves with the boys as the discussion is cut to a close.

When the three boys approached the candle buds simon showed first intrest."Like candles.Candle bushes.Candle Buds" pg 40. Jack slashes at them with his knife and the scent spilled over them. "canndle buds." "You couldnt light them." said Ralph "They just look like candles" pg 40. "Green candles" said Jack contemptuousy, "We can't eat them, come on." pg 40. When Simon said that the candle bush looked like candles Ralph responded to Simon by basically saying that they served no purpose as a candle becasue you couldn't light them, Jacks response after Ralphs was to tell Ralph and Simon that the candle bush had no use to them because they couldnt eat them and he told them to move on becasue he wanted to get going and to look for some more food

Describe and explain the different reactions of Simon, Ralph and Jack to the "candle buds". Simon spoke first, saying that the bushes' buds had a strong resemblance to candles: '"Like candles. Candle bushes. Candle buds."' Jack slashed at them with his knife, unleashing a strong scent. They were quickly dismissed as useless, as they could neither eat them or light them. Anything unrelated to their survival is now unimportant.

I agree with both comments. Ralph particularly, but Jack also, seem to bring the conversation to an end there thinking they were not going to help them at all so there was no point in fussing about the because they might look like a candle and have the word candle in their name.

Simon seemed to be the most curious of the three boys, seeing as though he was the one who thought of the name. Ralph couldn't see any value to them, but he was still interested in the unusual bushes. Jack saw the "candle buds" as useless and didn't pay much attention to them once he saw that they were inedible.

I agree with this, and I also want to add that Simon is shown as the 'good' character who appreciates the beauty of nature and is therefore more curious about these strange and exotic plants, but Ralph and Jack don't find them useful or important.

Jack says this in a manner that hints that the discussion is pointless and so are the candle buds. I think that Simon's reaction to the candle buds showed that he's the most interested in them out of the three boys, since he was the one who brought up the conversation about them and actually put in the effort of thinking of a proper name for them. He first called them candle bushes and then changed his mind to candle buds. The other boys, however, didn't put much effort into thinking about the candle buds and only mentioned the first things that came to their minds when they saw them. Ralph is more concerned with being the chief and getting rescued, so he finds the candle buds useless to him. Jack is concerned with food, since the first thing he thought of when he saw the wild pig was that he should try and kill it, so the candle buds are also useless to him. Simon's reaction could show that he's concerned with none of these things and might have a different perspective of the island than the other boys.
