When George meets Lennie in the clearing, he has to think of a way to distract Lennie. He tells him the story of how they are going to own there own land, telling Lennie,"look across the river, Lennie, and I'll tell you so you can almost see it." This is significant as it gets Lennie to look away from George, so he doesn't have to look as his best friend and kill him, and so that Lennie isn't afarid, but happy in his last moments.

Not only does George tell him the story of them getting a farm, Lennie also asks for George to draw the comparison between them and other farmers. This make Lennie happy and doesnt think anything of what is about to happen.

George tells Lennie about what their dream farm looks like. this was important because it's what Lennie's looking forward to in life, this makes George feel a bit better because Lennie died thinking his most happy thought.

George distracts Lennie with the happy idea of their farm, and so Lennie doesnt look at him when George shoots his bestfriend and Lennie dies with happy thoughts in his mind.
