If Ralph stepped down from being the chief, then Jack would be the chief. They think that if Jack was chief then there would be no fire and everyone would be hunting. Piggy thinks that Jack would attack him and the boys would never get off the island. Jack would do everything his way and he would be doing it to feed his ego, not for the good of the group. Also if Jack did become the leader, they knew they wouldn't get rescued because there would definitely be no fire to create smoke and also, Jack didn't want too get rescued. |

Ralph listens and respects the opinions of most boys in the group and feels the need to be rescued more than Jack, and therefor with him as leader increasing their chances of being noticed by a passing vessel or ship.
