When humans see something that excites or frightens them, we tend to over exaggerate in order to get across our experience to others, and make ourselves seem more credible. Samneric only heard flapping from the fabric of the parachute, but they exaggerated, turning the harmless fabric into a beastie, with claws and teeth that chased them through the forest.

I think they also don't want the other boys to think of them as 'scaredy cats'. I believe that is also what makes them exaggerate the beastie to the extent of saying they see things without actually seeing them.

What does Sam and Eric's description of the beast tell us about human psychology? Sam and Eric over exaggerated about what they saw of the beastie. They said they saw teeth and other scary things when really they only saw and heard flapping of the fabric. Due to the fact the other boys not experiencing this the had to go by what Sam and Eric told them. This tells us that even though humans exaggerate there experiences to make them seem more exhilarating or credible, if we haven't seen it for ourselves we go by what could be made up or far from the truth.

I agree but also Sam and Eric, just like everyone else on the island, are still young and as we all know, children exaggerate things a lot! This is also a subtle reality check just reminding us they are children.

I agree that people exaggerate to convey their meaning and that this is what happened in the case of Samneric. The fact that the exaggerated so much could suggest they are very concerned and scared about there being a beastie on the island.

What does Sam and Eric's description of the beast tell us about human psychology? SamnEric's over exaggeration of the description of the beastie tells us that humans see things as a lot worse than they actually are when they're afraid. They also thought that the beast was chasing them through the forest, when it was still sitting on top of the mountain, which shows that when humans feel afraid they start to get paranoid that there's danger all around them when there's probably not.

I agree with your answer and also think that maybe they thought they saw scary features of the body because they were so frightened and couldn't get there thoughts straight.

I agree with your statement about Sam and Eric not wanting the boys to see them as scaredy cats. By exaggerating the characteristics of the beast, they made themselves seem more brave.

This is also a subtle reality check just reminding us they are children. I agree with this, the boys over-exaggerated what they saw of the man. I think this is because if there is more of attention to the beastie the boys will do something about it quicker, which will make them feel safe. And the boys are young and being frightend by something could be the cause of them making different images in there head.

What does Sam and Eric's description of the beast tell us about human psychology? It tells us that people can over exaggerate when in a certain situation. The boys described things that they didn't see and it was obvious to the reader that they didn't exist. They wanted to get their experience across but they exaggerate the story and fabricated things to make it sound more scary.

What does Sam and Eric's description of the beast tell us about human psychology? Sam and Eric's description and exaggeration of the "beast", tells us that our instinct is to hyperbolize the truth, in order to make ourselves seem brave, increase our credibility and sometimes, justify our actions. To make sure the boys don't look upon them as cowards, they make their fears seem reasonable by turning what they saw and heard, into something worth fearing.

They wanted to get their experience across but they exaggerate the story and fabricated things to make it sound more scary. I think they did this because they feared that they would be rejected and ridiculed if they didn't have a good reason for being terrified.
