Homework instructions: Post a three point plan (your three main ideas) for TWO of the essay topics in the 'The Truman Show Plans' section of the forum. For the other two topics you must reply to someone else's plan with constructive feedback.
Remember, when planning ask yourself why and how? Look at the key words of the topic to see if you can form three main ideas based on those. Perhaps look at both sides of the topic and then expand on one of those sides, or add a third side. Ask yourself, if I was to respond to this topic in a three stage conversation, what would those three stages be?
Here is one of the four topics:
Fear is not the only tool used by Christof to control Truman, but it is the most powerful. Do you agree?

1.Truman's fear of water, due to huge dramatic death of his father, traps him in Seahaven as the town is surrounded by water. 2. The neighbours dog, due to its size and violent barking, is used to scare Truman, making him feel vulnerable and want to head toward his home which is 'safe' 3. At the very end Christof tells Truman that he only created Seahaven inorder to keep him safe and protect him from the 'horrors' of the real world. He says this to try and use fear against Truman, hoping to convince him to stay

1. Fear took a very important role in holding Truman in Seahaven, it was used through the dog, his father's death and his strong fear of water. All of these fears Truman had strengthened over the course of his life and allowed the television show to keep him in Seahaven and keep the cameras rolling.
2. Other tools are used to keep Truman from escaping including the manipulation of his emotions. Truman's mother, Marlon and other characters within the town manipulate Truman's thoughts through the things they say and do. For example Truman's mother reignites his fear of water when saying how she didn't blame him for his father's death.
3. Through presenting Seahaven as such an idyllic town where nothing bad could ever happen, Truman is lead to believe that there is no reason why he would want or need to leave the town. Even when he decides to go to Fiji, there are still tools in place to prevent this from happening.

1. In order to keep Truman is Seahaven, the director, Christof, manipulates him by using physical objects in which he develops a fear of such as the water or never seeing his father.
2. Truman, for a majority of his life whilst living in Seahaven, is brain-washed to believe by his 'loved ones' and many others that he would only be happy where he is in his comfort zone and then results into him staying where he is.
3. There are other ways that Chistof keeps Truman at Seahaven, such as bringing his father back, which inevitably means that Truman does not want to go.

1. Truman is trapped in Seahaven by being manipulated by Christof, the director of the show, by his fear of the sea due to the death of his father and the use of the neighbour's dog.
2. The director plays with Truman's emotions to control him by using his loved ones to target him such as when Truman's mother getting sick so he couldn't go after Sylvia to Fiji or getting Marlon, Meryl and his mother to change his way of thinking.
3. Truman is manipulated into thinking that Seahaven is the place where he belongs and nowhere else in the world is better. This is done by the hidden messages in the newspapers, signs in the town and by what people say to him.

1. To keep Truman on the set in Seahaven, Christof has implanted a fear of the neighbours dog and of water into Trumans brain and this was done when his father died at sea.
2. Truman's friend marlin and his mother are used to manipulate his emotions and feelings towards things in an attempt to make him feel that he is safe and secure and that there is no need for him to ever leave Seahaven.
3. Christof tries to use fear against Truman when he wants to convince him to stay on the island. He tells Truman that he is trying to shield him from the horrific outer world beyond the dome.

The progression from fear, ways of control and trumans overall view is a good set up!

Fear is used in physical elements such as his neighbour's dog, which is big and barks very loudly, Truman's unhealthy fear of water due to early traumatic experiences and the death of his father, leaving him in Seahaven as it is surrounded by water and the fact that he's responsible for caring for his mother. 2. Contrary to that, Critoff decides to bring Truman's father back to keep him in Seahaven and keep the TV show running. 3. His emotions are strongly toyed with by his 'family and friends'. Marlon and his workmates remind him that Seahaven has been voted the best place on Earth, urging him to stay, as well as Meryl and his mother's contradictions that he shouldn't do this and shouldn't question that.

I like the order of them and especially think that by bringing back Truman's father, would definitely be an incentive for him to stay in Seahaven after grieving over him for such a number of years. You could possibly add how the whole show is on a loop and how that would make Truman stuck in a routine day after day, making him unable to leave and think for himself.

1. Throughout The Truman Show fear is used as a tool to keep Truman on the island, it’s used through the neighbour’s dog and through his fear of water. 2. Through the lies that are created by Truman’s ‘family and friends’ he is manipulated and brainwashed into believing he doesn’t need to go anywhere. 3. The actors excaudate everything causing Truman’s emotions to be all over the place, he is hardly ever left to himself so he can sort them out.

I like your ideas of how the actors are continuously annoying Truman, and his he is 'brainwashed.' The bottom two are maybe a little similar but could be separated more by the used of CAMELS as evidence

>Christof does not use fear as his most powerful weapon to control Truman as Christof built his world of Seahaven as the ideal place to live, Truman should have no fears inside the city >Christof does however use Truman's fear of boating to discourage him from escaping by the sea, so Truman's fear is keeping him inside the town of Seahaven (Therefor under the control of Christof) >Truman was never really skeptical about his life until the events during the movie that cause him to believe the world revolves around him, and that is when he becomes fearful. Truman was only truly fearful once Christof lost some of his control.

Would you say manipulation of his thoughts and emotions is the most powerful tool? Maybe you could write about three different emotions or how one is more powerful than the others...

1. Fear was a major weakness of Truman, a weakness that he had no control over. His fears developed by the drowning of his father. Christoff used the death of Trumans father to prevent Truman ever wanting to leave Seahaven.
2. The actors within the tv show used emotions to manipulate and make Truman fearful of ever leaving Seahaven. Trumans mother, Marlin and Meryl try to make Truman feel safe at Seahaven and make him feel as if he doesn't ever need to be anywhere else.
3. When Truman opens the door of Seahaven Chrisstoff uses fear to convince Truman to stay his world. He tells him that there is no more truth out there then there is in Seahaven. This is to make Truman feel pressured and fearful of the real world. Chrisstoff wants Truman to feel this way to keep the tv show rolling.

1. Truman is Trapped only within the things he fears, and these fears have been manipulated by Christof from his childhood, fear stood in his path of adventure.
2. The fear though it is elusively hidden, it reflects itself in things like the ocean sickness and with his loved ones. Christof manipulates him primarily thought the ones he loves.
3. As Chrisof's grip starts to slip he begins to hit Truman with reassurance. Reassurance in paper articles and in the spoken words of other actors, but stands as more of a threat to stop Truman from leaving Seahaven .
